COMER ~ FOOD FOR THE SOUL
The
First Missionary Trip
Act. 13:1-4, "In the church at Antioch
there were prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Simeon called Niger,
Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen (who had been brought up with Herod the
tetrarch) and Saul. While they were worshiping the Lord and
fasting, the Holy Spirit said, "Set apart for me Barnabas
and Saul for the work to which I have called them." So
after they had fasted and prayed, they placed their hands on
them and sent them off. The two of them, sent on their way
by the Holy Spirit, went down to Seleucia and sailed from there
to Cyprus."
Like most cities today, Antioch was racially diverse and
culturally pluralistic. As a result, when the scattered
believers arrived there (Acts 11:19-20), they had to wrestle
with how to make the gospel meaningful for a diversity of
groups.
I'm writing to you from Malaga, Spain and its
here that I must learn to adapt my approach to evangelism-making
it meaningful to a diverse group of people. There are many post
modern people in Spain, and they are different from me in many
ways, although I'm a Latino, I'm still influenced by differences
in culture, geography, heritage, and history. But one thing we
have in common is we are people of community.
And this is our common ground, like most people in the world we
first want to be a part of something, a community of people. We
want to belong, and it's in this community of belonging we start
to take on the beliefs. Post modern folks want to belong
to a community before they believe.
We
find this to be true many times on the college campus as well.
Most people under 40 want to belong (experience) before they
believe, where those over 45 want to believe (give me the facts)
in something and then belong to it. Many on the campuses today
want to experience Jesus in and around a community of believers;
they want to see Jesus in you and those in your group before
they believe in Jesus.
So,
how can you get involved in peoples' lives and help them to
connect to your believing community?

LLEVAR - IMPACT YOUR WORLD
Creating
Comunidad & Inviting others
3
Good Questions to Consider:
1.
What are characteristics of group I enjoy being a part
of?
2. What does
our group communicate to those not involved with us (either
other Christians or those that don't know Christ) - warmth,
welcome, inclusion, exclusion, cliques etc..?
3.
In our Destino movement - Is the cause greater than our
sense of community - how can we get a good balance?
3
Good steps to involve others:
1. Make
it easy for people to get involved - Anyone can
help hang up posters, bring some food to a party, offer their
home as a meeting place....Invite involvement early on, never do
anything in your ministry alone and build
relationships along the way.
2.
Get involved in the community - it communicates that
you want to be an active part of making a difference and showing
love through acts of service. It's a great way to bring people
together and creates a unique bond.....Assist or host a blood
drive, have ongoing collections (food, clothes etc) in
conjunction with another organization and donate to a local
ministry that helps people in need,
3.
Get involved in campus life - it's a great way to meet
people, show them who you are and invite involvement...Host
study groups for various subjects, Homecoming parades - floats,
nominating kings&queens, etc, Lipsync contests, talent
shows, pep rally's, tailgate with other groups, etc....see what
your campus does and get involved. It communicates great things
to the school administration and a great way to foster
involvement.
Have
fun creating famila & loving those around you with the
love of Christ!
