COMER ~ FOOD FOR THE SOUL
I
was hungry and you gave me something to eat…34,000
children die every day of hunger and preventable diseases. That's
24 a minute. Real children with names, dreams, hopes, kids who
never see adulthood because they struggle with hunger.
Christians today have a total annual income of over $10 trillion
dollars. And it's estimated, the cost to feed the world annually
is only $30 to $40 billion dollars.
I was thirsty and you gave me a drink…1.1
billion People in our world lack access to clean water. In most
developed countries, if you want an abundant, clean water supply
of water, you just turn your faucet on. But in other countries
people often travel, walk half a day or more just to fill a jug of
water.
I was a stranger and you invited me in…The
U.S. Committee for Refugees estimates that there are 13.6 million
or more refugees in dire need of protection and provisions. There
are at least 200 million street children (orphans) in the world
today! This is almost as many people that live in the United
States.
I was naked and you clothed me…Thousands
around the world are killed each year and left homeless because of
hurricanes, earthquakes, drought, and floods. As a nation we just
experienced what happens frequently around the world. And most of
these people are left with nothing, no clothes, no material
possession and recovery from a disaster can take years.
I was sick and you cared for me…Millions
of people die every year from infection and parasitic diseases we
know how to prevent. The most common diseases are typhoid,
cholera, tuberculosis, pneumonia, measles, smallpox, chicken pox -
preventable in many countries and a killer in others.
I was in prison and you came to visit
me…More Christians are persecuted
and martyred for their faith in this century than all previous
centuries combined.
And how can they hear without someone
preaching to them…Over two billion
people in the world claim to be Christians but 4.5 billion have
not heard or made a decision to follow Jesus Christ. There are
still billions of people who don't know Jesus and thousands of
people die a day without ever hearing of the love of Jesus Christ.
When we respond to human need, or fail to respond, we are in fact
responding or failing to respond to Jesus Christ. The bottom line,
what we really believe in, we do. If we love Jesus and follow him
we serve him by serving others, by meeting the needs of others.
Everything else is just religious rhetoric-James said in chapter
2:14-17, "What good is it, my
brothers, if a man claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such
faith save him? Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and
daily food. If one of you says to him, "Go, I wish you well;
keep warm and well fed," but does nothing about his physical
needs, what good is it? In the same way, faith by itself, if it is
not accompanied by action, is dead."
Words mean nothing, actions speak louder than
words…serving others, meeting peoples' needs-physical and
spiritual is the lifestyle of a follower of Jesus Christ.…God
never intended for believers to sit idle in church or on campus
while others struggle just to survive physically and spiritually.
Jesus said, 'I tell you the truth,
whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine,
you did for me.'

LLEVAR - IMPACT YOUR WORLD
What
are some ways your Destino movement or Bible study can
serve those on your campus & or in your community?
Here’s
a list of 10 things that may spark some ideas in your local group:
1.
Become a mentor or tutor to young kids in your
community. How? Go to the school and ask in the admin. office
how you can help. Or check to see if there
are local groups that
organize volunteers to the schools with the
biggest needs.
2.
Invite international students on
your campus over for dinner –
they rarely get to see inside American’s homes.
3.
Take a group to the hard hit places from Hurricane
Katrina – check with local churches for
groups going.
4.
Do a clothing/food drive on your campus to collect
for those in need from the Hurricane or those in your community.
5.
Take out student’s trash
in the dorms for a semester.
6.
Have a prayer table up on campus – take
prayer requests, pray for people and see how you can minister
further to people in need.
7.
Visit a children’s floor in a hospital and
put on a puppet show or other ways you can encourage the kids.
8.
Volunteer for a Global Aid Network (formally
Operation Carelift) project with a group from your campus. http://www.gainusa.org/
9.
Visit a Cancer center in your area and see how your
group can volunteer to
help encourage cancer patients in treatment.
10.
If you aren’t already
involved…see how you can serve in some area of your local
Destino ministry & or church with the talents the Lord has
given you. If you’d like to start a Destino movement, email us
back…we’ll help you.
Serving
brings glory to God and may give you an opportunity to share about
the hope you have
within you.
Imagine
the impact and glory to God if all of us took some time to serve
others in some way this semester!
