PARA COMER ~ FOOD FOR THE SOUL

We learned last week the antidote to conflict is humility, but it produces much more than that. Personal humility is the key to unity. Unity is attained by humility.

What is unity? Let's read what Christ had to say in John 17:20-23,

"My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one: I in them and you in me. May they be brought to complete unity to let the world know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me." (NIV)

Jesus' prayer request to the Father was unity for future believers, unity of love and common moral likeness. He was praying that believers might be one in exhibiting the character of God; that would be like Christ. This is what would cause the world to believe that God had sent Him. This is the unity which makes the world say, "I see Christ in those Christians!"

Romans 15:5-7,

"May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you a spirit of unity among yourselves as you follow Christ Jesus, so that with one heart and mouth you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Accept one another, then, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to God." (NIV)

Unity is forgiven sinners, accepting one another and loving one another, unity in relationshipsthis brings glory to God. We are not to live in isolation but in a community of believers. The word unity literally means one.

Unity is not a feeling, it's an action, an act of the will. Unity is achieved through humility, being concerned for others, serving others, and forgiving others.

Unity is torn apart by pride--self-centered people will do what is good for themselves, not what is best for the group.

What keeps us distant from people and the Lord? The sin of pride creates isolation between you and the Lord and between you and the people you love.

PARA LLEVAR – IMPACT YOUR WORLD: How can we promote unity?

1. Movement Prayer: Pray for God to continue to preserve and protect the unity within your Ministry/movement. Unity in your ministry is not only desirable but absolutely essential.

2. Personal Reflection & Action: Are you in conflict with others? In humility, take the initiative to go to that person you're in a conflict with and listen to their concerns; try to build bridges of openness and honestly for the sake of unity.

 3. Unity in the leadership: If the leadership will change in the Fall this is a good time of the year for you to be making those leadership decisions. Consider unity as you pray for, vote for and choose your new leaders.

  • Possible structure that would promote unity and growth: Consider having a Shepherd team & Servant team.
  • Shepherd team are leaders willing and able to give spiritual leadership to the movement. Focus on personal ministry, prayer, evangelism and discipleship.
  • Servant teams for various ministry functions like weekly meeting, community building, operations (finances, publicity etc.)
